A Digital Twin (DT) is being created as a next-generation solution for ship design and operational optimization in the present project, which offers an open virtual testbed for future ship design for decarbonization. In reality, the DT architecture and its application framework will serve as a virtual testbed for the development of various ship types, with wind-assisted propulsion ships serving as the validation and verification test cases. The project’s main goals will be to investigate DT applications in sustainable and digital ship design, to develop DT based on a specific architecture and application framework for wind-assisted propulsion ships, and to implement the developed digital twin to analyze the impact of decarbonization technologies (with a focus on sails).

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in machine learning for non-Newtonian turbulence

The purpose of this research is to apply machine learning to create wall models in non-Newtonian flows to achieve high Reynolds numbers with great accuracy and a cheap computing cost. We will utilize deep reinforcement learning in particular to create the wall model in a way that is compatible with the flow and the numbers. We will also use the created wall model to simulate viscoelastic flow in more sophisticated settings. The researcher will have access to KTH’s multi-petascale supercomputing resources, as well as the Swedish e-Science Research Centre and the superb research environment FLOW.

In Zambia and Laos, the study will concentrate on integrated resource optimization and stakeholder involvement for resource management and energy policy planning. The research project will include participation from national stakeholders to define the context, develop scenarios, and transfer modeling capacity.
