Global geochemical cycles underpin the Earth system, dictating where, when, and how many elements are cycled throughout the world. Numerous scientific ideas, including those about ocean chemistry and the consequences of future climate change on the oceans, are informed by these cycles. The geochemical fluxes from deep-sea hydrothermal systems, in which seawater flows through the seabed and returns to the ocean through hydrothermal vents, are a significant component of the global geochemical cycles. This fluid/rock interaction, or “hydrothermal alteration,” is preserved in the ocean crust, and we may calculate the hydrothermal geochemical flux by examining these crustal rocks. Nevertheless, inadequate core recovery from scientific ocean drilling and the temporal constraints of mineralogical and geochemical investigations impede these kinds of investigations.

Worldwide wildfire danger is rising due to climate change. Peatland wildfires have become more common and catastrophic in the UK in recent years
- Peatlands are crucial carbon-rich biodiverse ecosystems, and wildfires have the potential to seriously harm them and have a large negative influence on the environment
- Landscapes have traditionally been significantly shaped by fire
- However, uncontrolled fires cause ecosystem function to be lost and impair the potential of peatlands to store carbon
