(04) Ph.D. Degree in Department of Public Administration and Sociology:

Ph.D. position summary/title: ERC-funded project in critical logistics and racial capitalism (2 x 1fte)

Shipping is the global economy’s backbone. 90% of the world’s goods are transported by ship. The sector has a global footprint and a diversified workforce. It is also deeply unjust, having been molded by continuous legacies of racial, colonial, and gendered inequality. Shipping is undergoing rapid transformation as it digitalizes its workflows, and workers may soon face situations comparable to those found in other highly digitized businesses, such as Uber and Amazon. Although digitization has the potential to make employment safer and more effective, the benefits may be limited to a select few, and it threatens to simplify existing extraction and racial capitalism.
